- 1826 – The first train operates over the Granite Railway, one of the first railroads in North America, in Massachusetts.
- 1968 – Richard M. Dilworth, General Motors Electro-Motive Division chief engineer credited with developing the diesel-electric locomotive concept in the 1930s, dies (b. 1885).[1]
- 2001 – Railtrack, in England, is placed under legal administration by Stephen Byers, Secretary of State for Transport, effectively renationalizing the system.
- 2003 – RENFE opens the Madrid-Lerida section of the railroad's new Madrid-Barcelona line in Spain.
