- 1843 – Cornelius Vanderbilt II, president of the New York Central railroad, is born (d. 1899).
- 1892 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway inaugurates the California Limited passenger train (pictured) between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California, with the first departure from Chicago.
- 1910 – Pennsylvania Railroad's Manhattan Transfer station and the New Jersey side of the railroad's Hudson River tunnels (built by the Pennsylvania Tunnel and Terminal Railroad) open in New York City.
