- 1904 – The Southern Pacific Railroad completes the Coast Line between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California.
- 1949 – The first eastbound California Zephyr departs San Francisco at 9:20 AM, bound for Chicago.
- 1960 – The Pioneer Zephyr trainset (pictured) makes its final revenue run on a trip from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Kansas City, Missouri. It then continues through Galesburg, Illinois to Chicago, Illinois in preparation for its final disposition.
- 1965 – At least 17 stations and two lines closed in Airedale and Wharfedale in West Yorkshire, England, as a result of the Beeching Axe.[1]
