- 1938 – The Pike's Peak Cog Railway in Colorado operates gasoline-powered railcar number 7, the first rack railcar in the world, for the first time.
- 1950 – Copper Range Railroad's coal unloading dock at Houghton, Michigan, is razed.
- 1953 – New York Central ends steam locomotive operation on the former Michigan Central Railroad with a train pulled by 4-6-4 number 5434.
- 1974 – The Milwaukee Road ends operation of its electric locomotives (pictured) in Montana and Idaho. Trains over the Rocky Mountains are now solely powered by diesels.
