- 1797 – Daniel Drew, board member and financier of the Erie Railroad, is born (d. 1879).
- 1801 – George Bradshaw (pictured), English cartographer, printer and publisher and the originator of the railway timetable, is born (d. 1853).
- 1893 – Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway opens La Grande Station in Los Angeles, California.[1]
- 1940 – Rail traffic is suspended in France between French-retained and German-occupied territories.
