- 1830 – Ground is broken in Charleston, South Carolina, for the first railroad to use steam locomotives in South Carolina, the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road.
- 1843 – William Hedley, English engineer who designed and built Puffing Billy (pictured) in cooperation with Timothy Hackworth, dies (b. 1773).[1]
- 1882 – The first train from Cincinnati, Ohio, on the Cincinnati Northern Railway, departs for Dayton, Ohio.
- 2003 – Following its purchase of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and its subsidiaries, operations begin on the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway in New England, Quebec and New Brunswick.[2]
