- 1850 – Henry Huntington, nephew of Collis P. Huntington and executive in charge of Pacific Electric in the early part of the 20th century, is born (d. 1927).
- 1869 – The first line of what is now Athens Metro (pictured), in Greece, opens as Athens Piraeus Railway SA.
- 1912 – The Pacific Great Eastern Railway (predecessor of the British Columbia Railway) is incorporated to build a line from Vancouver north to a connection with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway at Prince George, British Columbia.
