- 1808 – John Edgar Thomson, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad 1852–1874, is born.
- 1851 – The Illinois Central Railroad is chartered.[1]
- 1879 – The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railway begins freight operations.[2]
- 1950 – Canadian National Railway gains control of Temiscouata Railway in the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick.[3]
