- 1866 – The first demonstration runs are held on the Mount Washington Cog Railway, in New Hampshire, as Peppersass, the road's first steam locomotive, hauls a platform of passengers up a 0.1 mile (161 m) section of track.
- 1907 – The Quebec Bridge (pictured), the largest cantilever bridge in the world, collapses during construction, killing 76 construction workers.
- 1979 – Bangor and Aroostook Railroad discontinues hauling potatoes; it was for this business that the railroad painted many of their boxcars in a distinctive red, white and blue "State of Maine" livery.
