- 1831 – The Allegheny Portage Railroad in Pennsylvania begins construction on the Staple Bend Tunnel (pictured), the first railroad tunnel in the United States.[1]
- 1862 – Andrew's Raiders steal The General and drive it north toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, with Western and Atlantic Railroad conductor William Fuller chasing it in the Great Locomotive Chase.
- 1970 – Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad discontinues its Black Hawk passenger train service between Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.
- 1995 – The Chicago and North Western Railway is merged into the Union Pacific Railroad.
