Image of a snare drum transient from "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson (Ah Via Musicom, 1990), boosted by 9dB with Adobe Audition. This image shows the amount of clipping that would result if such a process were applied to the recording in an amount required to achieve the loudness standard of current popular compact discs.
