The Cambridge plant opened in 1988, and has been expanded twice since. This was Toyota's second car-assembly plant in North America, after the plant in Georgetown, Kentucky opened in 1987, and the first Toyota assembly plant in Canada. The plant produces the Corolla, Matrix and Lexus RX models for the North American market, as well as other four cylinder engines, and employs 4,300 people. TMMC is the first and currently only plant outside of Japan to produce a Lexus brand vehicle.
In 2007, TMMC was named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers, as published in Maclean's magazine, the only automaker to receive this honour.[3]
The Woodstock plant is under construction, and due to open in 2008. The location was picked due to its educated workforce, proximity to the Cambridge plant, and being adjacent to the major transportation corridors, Highway 401 and 403. Woodstock's bid reportedly beat out several US states that were offering over twice the subsidies. It is set to produce the RAV4 model, and employ 2,000 people.[4]
The current projected start of production is October 2008.
