Toxic Shock (or Blood Shot in the United Kingdom), published in New York in 1988 is a novel by Sara Paretsky based on the character V. I. Warshawski, a female private investigator.

V.I. Warshawski isn't crazy about going back to her old South Chicago neighbourhood, but a promise is something she always keeps.

V.I. Warshawski is a women with determination, and after returning to her home town for a school reunion she soon finds herself investigating what should have been a simple investigation. One investigation of searching for her childhood friends father soon leads to numerous crimes of corruption, sexual abuse and murder.
