Thermo Plastic Sheathed (TPS) cable normally consists of a white or off white outer sheath of thermoplastic, one or more inner coloured thermoplastic sheaths, and a core or cores of plain annealed copper, either single or multi strand. These strands of copper are much thicker than the strands in appliance cable, and are likely to fracture if bent repetitively.

The type of thermoplastic, sizing of the conductor(s) etc. are covered by different regulatory bodies around the world.

Flat TPS is the most common and is used for the fixed wiring of domestic and industrial lighting, power outlets, and heating. Round TPS is less common and is usually used where glands are required.

It is more difficult to strip the insulation from round TPS than flat.
