I am a sporadic copy-editor of wiki pages, but mostly a user. Then along came some of the "alternatives" to Wikipedia, each with it's own determinedly biased editorial policies, and I decided to become more active when I saw a chance or need in supporting the Wikipedia project.

With that desire comes the need to have a public identity for tracking any changes or edits... while my desire was never to "hide" behind a semi-anonymous IP address, it makes no sense not to declare who you are if you are taking a public stand on sharing information and having earnest discussions.
