Tommy & Rumble
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tommy & Rumble is a radio program broadcast on FM99 in Virginia. The show, hosted by Tommy Griffiths and Rick Rumble, began in 1995 and is one of the most popular morning radio shows in Virginia[citation needed]. This popularity is due in large part to the comedic banter from the two hosts and their co-workers, as well as the famous (and hilarious) radio bits they create.
The FM99 morning originated in the 1980s. It was called "Reeger and the Bull" hosted by Ron Reeger and Henry Del Toro, a.k.a. "The Bull". When Reeger left, he was replaced by Jimmy Ray Dunn and the show became "Jimmy and the Bull". From 1990 through 1995, the show was called "Tommy & the Bull", hosted by Tommy Griffiths and Del Toro. Both Griffiths and Del Toro were once fined and suspended from the show for two weeks for an April Fools Day joke in which they told listeners that Mount Trashmore was about to blow up. Del Toro left the show and WNOR in June 1995, and was replaced by Rick Rumble. Griffiths would ultimately sue Del Toro in 1996 on the grounds of slander after being called a cocaine addict and dealer by Del Toro; Griffiths settled the law suit, and was paid $100,000.00. Del Toro passed away in 2002. Rick Rumble became a hit in the 757, with his quick wit and myriad of celebrity voice impersonations. Tommy is still the anchor of the show, and it is no wonder why he has remained on the show since 1990. His rapier like wit, urbane sense of humor, and perfect comic timing has led to the shows high ratings and success, despite working with two partners, three news girls, and several producers over the years. The "Tommy and Rumble" incarnation of the WNOR morning show is one of the longest running morning radio programs in the country, and is revered with in the radio industry as one of the best. [1] [2]
Among the other cast members working on the Tommy and Rumble program are traffic reporter "Chill" and news correspondent Shelley. The previous news correspondent, Nikki Reed, worked on the show for thirteen years. Reed gave her last newscast on June 27, 2007. Shelley is now the show's news reporter and producer. She assumed Reed's post on June 28. Eric Winslow is the show's blogger, co-producer and board-op.
Tommy & Rumble are particularly notable for "Dickin's Cider", "Balzac", and their song Elmo's Got a Gun, a parody of Aerosmith's Janie's Got a Gun. This is commonly misattributed to "Weird Al" Yankovic.
Together, they have produced twelve CDs benefiting their radio station's Christmas Wish Fund:
