Thomas Russell Laverty II was born in Saginaw, Michigan on December 22, 1980. His mother is of south-Mexican descent and his father is of mixed European, American heritage. Known mainly for his musical contributions to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, his collegiate studies are in poetry, and fiction. He was a pupil of the Detroit fiction artist Peter Markus from '98-'00. Laverty performed with and co-founded múnbút, Paulding Light, Groove Congress, Veritas -- was an integral member of Ignorant Mob (2002-'05), and founded Northern Michigan University's student organization Marquette Jam Alliance. He is an ordained clergy member of the Church of Spiritual Humanism.

From '02-'05 he recorded four emo-electronic albums entitled: Lamplighter, Hero Holds the Lamp, Lamplighter Three, and Lamplighter Four; the first two were released on his private label, Lamplighter Recorded.
Current project is called Tomás Tomás y Los Niños Perdidos, where he plays elec/acoustic guitars and sings in Spanish, Portuguese and French. The backing band is made up of several members of [Ignorant Mob http://www.ignorantmob.com].

"You're probably hearing of Tom Laverty before ever hearing Tom Laverty. I first heard him before seeing him.

In the University Center on NMU's campus a few years ago, I had a 20-minute break between commitments. Piano tones enticed me into the lounge area, and there I saw a slender guy with a scruffy beard and dark-rimmed glasses caressing the keys on that old baby grand. Nobody else around. I eased onto the couch and gazed out the big windows at the Northern Naturally scene. Rhythms, tempos, melodies sent me. The piano man smoothly transitioned through several styles—jazz, classical, rock, blues, rag—sometimes pounding the chords, other times tinkling with aching beauty and suspense. I looked at my watch.
