Tokashiki, Okinawa

Tokashiki (渡嘉敷村 Tokashiki-son?) is a village located in Shimajiri district, Okinawa, Japan. It is an island, known worldwide for its corals, sea, beach and sun. From Tomari Port in Okinawa (47 prefecture from Japan) it takes less than one hour to reach this Island.
As of 2003, the village has an estimated population of 775 and the density of 40.41 persons per km². The total area is 19.18 km².
On 28 May 1945, during Second World War, 394 inhabitants, mostly from farmer families, immolated themselves with grenades after the landing of US troops.[1]
