My father, Calvin Schimmel, 1898-1985 and my uncle Joe Schimmel 1886-1955, often talked of Todd Sloan, who was their step-brother. Todd was originally Willie Schimmel, born 1872, son of Louis Schimmel and Ella Schimmel, nee Morris of Madisonville Ky. Louis, 1841 -1900 was 3rd Lieutenant in Comp. F, Johnsons calvary regiment, under John Hunt Morgan in Confederate Army. Willie Schimmel ran away as a young boy, changed his name to Tod Sloan and became the famous jockey. He would return to the Schimmel farm in Kentucky once in a great while for a short visit. We think Willie became estranged from his Father Louis, because Louis took a second wife after Willie's mother died. My brother did a lot of genealogy work on our family, also he could find no records on Todd Sloan from Indiana, so it does appear Sloan's official history is made-up.
