Tira (ティラ Tira?) - "The Misguided Angel of Death" - is a fictional character designed for the Soul series of fighting games. Her first appearance is in Soulcalibur III, recognizable by the abundance of green (including hair color) in her ragged attire. She is scheduled to return in Soulcalibur IV - with a very new look. Her ravens appear in previous games of the series, sometimes giving pieces of Soul Edge to Nightmare, alluding to her existence.

Tira fights with a large bladed ring reminiscent of a hula hoop (the Soul Edge version resembles the Ouroboros symbol) which she swings around her wrists, feet, body, and can also throw it into the air. Some of Tira's moves change her positioning during combat.

[edit] Background Story

Tira's origins trace back to her associations with an underground organization, though nothing further is known about her history. This organization, which went by the name "Bird of Passage", formed contracts with powerful people and sent out assassins to eliminate important figures in society. However, the group kept its existence a secret and were allies with no one. Tira was raised by the group since childhood, stripped of her freedom and choice for her future. Her Soulcalibur III bio explains that she grew accustomed to taking the lives of others without feeling anything, and grew to the point where killing became an addiction, committing such actions on a regular basis for the stimulation it provided. Eventually, she became free from the Bird of Passage after the leader's mind was burnt by the Evil Seed raining down while Tira was in the middle of a mission. With the chain of command now collapsed, Tira departed from the underground to roam the outside world with freedom. Tira continued her newfound life, taken in by an ordinary family in a quiet city amongst normal people, and although she still felt the slight urge to bring death to others, she managed to keep it contained, deciding that ordinary life was "okay". However, this peaceful lifestyle would not last for her dormant killing desire was triggered when she was scolded for releasing the pet bird of the family's child from its cage, giving no clear reason why, and was soon standing before the corpses of her now-former "family" before she realized what had happened.

Tira figured that she cannot live without inflicting death and, during her aimless wandering, she found out about the massacres of Nightmare and began to track him, finding something of a kindred spirit in the Azure Knight. She reached Ostrheinsburg, where she met a man wielding a scythe (actually Zasalamel), who informed her that she in fact sought the wicked sword, Soul Edge, and that Nightmare was just a puppet. Upon hearing the revelation, she was disappointed for a short time but rejoiced at the news of Nightmare's reappearance. She finally found Nightmare after following trails of slaughters, and pledged herself entirely as faithful servant to the evil sword.

Tira operates secretly behind the scenes with two set objectives: destroy the spirit sword, Soul Calibur, thus breaking the seal over Soul Edge's body; and locate a new host for the cursed sword, since his actual body is an unstable temporal shell and he needs a host with both strong spiritual will and a body to operate. Tira is shown in Soulcalibur III to switch expressions and the tone of her quotes, which may hint at signs of bipolarity.

[edit] Gameplay

Tira is a short-ranged character due to the length of her ring blade. She is often viewed a hard character to master because most of her staple moves suffer from impractical reach and meager damages. Her signature move is Groove Disc.

[edit] Weapon(s)

-- Aiselne Drossel

A standard ring blade used by Tira in the video game. Nothing is really known about this weapon. The blade of the ring is dull on the inside and sharp on the outside, allowing Tira to hold it and swing it around without injuring herself. Its name is a misspelling of "Eiserne Drossel", meaning "Iron Thrush" in German[1].

--Ixion

Another ring blade for Tira. The blade of the ring is completely bedecked in spiky, gold and black frills, reminiscent of a lightning-bolt pattern (apt, since the weapon's namesake, Ixion, is likened to lightning).

--Soul Edge

This weapon is unlocked after finishing the Tales of Souls mode with Tira. This weapon resembles a giant, dried snake curled within itself on a loop, its outer edge framed with a jagged rim of metal. Like all Soul Edge weapons, this version of Soul Edge, while it possesses a great capacity for strength, drains Tira's health.

---Cogwheel

This is Tira's joke weapon. All characters are given a joke weapon which can be unlocked after accomplishing a certain amount of goals in the game, but these weapons are not necessarily useful. Most of these joke weapons have inferior attack strength compared to the other unlockable weapons, and are only notable in that, when they strike their opponents, they create a humorous sound. Tira's joke weapon, as the name implies, is a giant cogwheel.

[edit] Stages

-- Ostrheinsburg Castle - Battlement Much time has passed since this proud, once-impregnable fortress, with its four citadels, was reduced to ruin. The scars inflicted by giant siege engines several years ago tell the tale of the horror of war. After losing its first lord and falling into ruin, this castle was occupied by a terrible master known as the Azure Knight. The chaos of war, and then the Azure Knight, filled this land with bitter hatred. A miasmal fog still lingers over the castle even after the knight has left. It is said that this fictional land, avoided even by wild beasts, feels like home to those who have accepted evil into their hearts. Those who visit this place will surely see the dark birds that gather at the top of the tower of this crumbling castle.

[edit] Epilogues

At the end of Soulcalibur III with Tira's story it depicts her walking through Sophitia's home looking for Soul Edge's new body:

-- Ending 1 (Soulcalibur III) [Left/Default] Tira will find the room where Sophitia's children are sleeping in. The screen will then fade Tira asks if the children likes her Ring Blade, resulting in the childrens' answer of yes. Tira will then say that she's glad that the children do.

-- Ending 2 (Soulcalibur III) [Right] Tira will continue to search for Sophitia's daughter, only to be ambushed by Sophitia and Cassandra and chased out the window. There, after escaping the household, Soul Edge decides to possess Tira. Her body and clothes turn purple as Soul Edge speaks, using her as a medium, saying that her body will have to suffice "for now."

Ending 1 is the canon ending for Soul Calibur IV
