[edit] State Template

Hey, I dont think you should create a state name->template thingo, because that will be nearly pointless. It be flexible it would take up more space than a switch statement. Better is to educated people on the use of the switch statement. --TheJosh 02:34, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes there are a number of templates that are functions. Cant think of any off the top of my head, but Help:Templates may be able to help, or look for protected templates.

[edit] Problem with {{Infobox U.S. County}} template

Hi. Could you please fix the {{Infobox U.S. County}} template so that the articles about Georgia counties point to Georgia (U.S. state) instead of just "Georgia"? Thanks. Khatru2 07:40, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

My gosh! I hadn't considered this. Thanks for noticing. I have fixed it now. Timneu22 (talk · contribs) /Timneu22 17:51, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template question

Here's one I hadn't considered. Can you tell me if this is possible?

In a template, I have a variable named {{{person}}}. I want the following to happen:

  • if the user creates the page with {{{person}}} = Michael Jordan, just use {{{person}}}
  • if the user creates the page with {{{person}}} = Michael Jordan, render the page as [[{{{person}}}]]
My Reply
Yes! I do these all the time. I once created a template called AutoLink. Syntax: {{AutoLink|{{{person}}}}} Michael Jordan
You can also add a second param for a link name {{AutoLink|{{{person}}}|Sick}} Sick

[edit] re: U.S. County template

Thanks for noticing, but there are no problems with the CA county articles anymore because I modified them directly after I reverted the template back.

I realized what the bug is, although I cannot offhand remember what ID number it is under in the Bugzilla database. It had to do with the combination of the fact that there is a space in the parameter variable "map size", and the fact that the CA county map images stored on Commons are over 500px in width.

Somehow, if the article only had

map size = |

the map image would be displayed in its full 500px+ width instead of the default value of 250px. I either had to remove that line entirely from the article, or actually specify a map size value. I chose the latter.[1]

However, I see that you have now removed "map size" and the problem is no longer relevant. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:36, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Histpop

I see you added a reference to the Histpop template on the U.S. County infobox template page. I like that histpop template much more than the "Population by decade" template, but it isn't very easy to maintain because of its variable usage, and also because there isn't a "pre" section on the Template page to make copying/pasting easier. Do you want to look at tweaking the "Population by decade" template to have the look and feel of Histpop? /Timneu22 11:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I think {{USCensusPop}} should meet those needs better. I'd suggest {{population by decade}} be deprecated and users encouraged to move to {{USCensusPop}}. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 15:54, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for adding estimate/estimateyear to USCensusPop. I updated the template even further to include those two variables in the "pre" section so people know about them. /Timneu22 17:08, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] It's done!!

There are no longer any U.S. articles that use {{Histpop}}! All articles have been switched to {{USCensusPop}}. /Timneu22 01:33, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Cool, good work. I've also added U.S. Census data for all of the New Jersey counties. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 05:42, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edit summary

Hello. I think you're freaking some people out when they see a triple digit character count change in their watch lists. Could you please leave a relevant edit summary to make things a little easier on all of us? Thanks! —Elipongo (Talk|contribs) 00:56, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Reply to question on my talk page
If enabled, each edit shown in an editors watchlist shows the number of characters that changed with that edit. It's color coded red for negative and green for positive and gets bolded for larger changes. I believe this is also visible in the Recent change page. An example would be your edit to Connecticut which resulted in a negative character change of (-921). Without an edit summary, people will rush over to the page thinking somebody's deleted a huge chunk of the article. Thanks, and thanks for working on the new template too! —Elipongo (Talk|contribs) 01:06, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Ahh, cool, I was about to add a request also. In the "[[Special:Recentchanges|recent changes]" listing, your edits will show up as notable because they are reducing the size of the page by a lot. For instance, what I saw was:
(diff) (hist) . . Hawaii‎; 00:29 . . (-462) . . Timneu22 (Talk | contribs) (→Demographics)
but in the listing that number is in dark red, looking like a 'bad' thing. It tickles the vandal fighters with a "false positive" ;-) Shenme 01:08, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
"I also like this new template because it takes some stuff out of editors hands so they are less likely to screw it up!"
Yes, well, anything that stops dumb editing errors is a good thing, like mine above. (sigh)  ;-) Shenme 01:20, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] us census pop template

The last year doesn't seem to be displaying. See Wisconsin. -Ravedave (Adopt a State) 01:29, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

yeah I guess 2006 would be an estimate, and its not showing. -Ravedave (Adopt a State) 01:42, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Fixed for Wisconsin. For the estimate, you need to specify the year seperately. I put in the 2005 numbers, as that is what I found on the Census site. Added reference. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 13:30, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar

I just wanted to thank you for awarding me with a Barnstar. It's the first one I've received since joining Wikipedia. Thanks again! RyguyMN 00:24, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Would you mind helping?

I am trying to start a wiki that is focused on wrestling and video games. I figured that since it uses hte same design as Wikipedia (MediaWiki, or whatever it's called), that I could basically copy wrestling and video game templates like {{Template:Infobox Wrestling event}} and {{Template:Infobox VG}}, but they aren't working. Here is what I ended up with [2]. Would you mind creating a few templates there? Specifically: Template:Infobox VG, Template:Infobox Wrestler and Template:Infobox Wrestling event since those are the only three I would really use. TJ Spyke 07:07, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh, and Template:Infobox Wrestling team as well. Thank you in advance if you do it. TJ Spyke 07:57, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
They exist here on Wikipedia, I was wondering if you would be willing to create them on my wiki. Another user told me mine doesn't support ParserFunctions, so that may be why I couldn't just copy the code from here and use it there. TJ Spyke 01:48, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar!

The Template Barnstar
For the upgrading that you've been doing to Template:Infobox U.S. County—Great Job! Thank you. —MJCdetroit 02:12, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Like I said in my reply at Template talk:Infobox U.S. County, I wouldn't advocate merging at this time. It just seems like way too much work. However, just to show you that it can be done and done well, here's Wayne County using Infobox Settlement (aka Infobox City). You can delete the code after you look at it. Keep up the good work. Regards, —MJCdetroit 00:20, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Again, I think this is far too confusing. Most of these fields don't apply to U.S. Counties and I'm sure it would be confusing to use. I would be confused if I had to fill out all these fields. Which don't I fill out? The average user couldn't tell. I mean, there are four page-downs involved with this template! Too difficult. With {{Infobox U.S. County}}, it is easy for a user to know what fields represent what. Plus, U.S. County templates don't require the user to do anything with map images — they just appear automatically. /Timneu22 00:24, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Like I said, it could be done but at this point why? {{Infobox U.S. County}} works good enough. Cheers MJCdetroit 00:30, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Cool. Thanks again for the barnstar. /Timneu22 00:34, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Adminship

You may want to ask someone who you have worked with more on Wikipedia, as I am not very familiar with your edits. Some tips I can give you, however, is to add yourself to Category:Wikipedia administrator hopefuls and add yourself to Wikipedia:Editor review, this will give you advice that I recommend before running for adminship. Some more advice would be to look at past successful and unsuccessful RfA's to see what else you might need to work on. VegaDark 00:19, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiquette consideration

Since we're all editors here, would it be that much harder to spend your time adding the infoboxes instead of nagging other people to do it? Just asking. --Dystopos 00:27, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the explanation. I'm not going to tell you what's acceptable or not. I just wanted to express my irritation at the general problem of people using their time to assign tasks to others instead of just doing what needs to be done. It sounds like you're among the least of the offenders and I apologize for singling you out. --Dystopos 00:53, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ohio Counties

Thanks for noticing - all Ohio counties now have infoboxes but not all have been updated. I plan to update the rest, then make a second pass through and add some refs for the dates and general info. I also will make a pass through the Pennsylvania county infoboxes too. Ruhrfisch 01:05, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi Tim, I made a third pass through the Ohio counties and added largest city in each. User:Nyttend and I have discussed these and thought there were a few issues which arose that you might want to know about. 1) If the seat was also the largest city, it is not wikilinked the second time (per WP:MOS). 2) For cities extending into more than one county, only the population in that county is counted to determine largest (so a small part of Columbus extends into Delaware County, but despite Columbus being the largest city in Ohio, the city of Delaware is the largest in Delaware County, Ohio (there is always a ref for such cases). 3) Most importantly, there are a number of counties such as Vinton County, Ohio where the largest municiplaity is a village (pop under 5000 by Ohio law) and not a city (pop over 5000). In Pennsylvania there will be counties where a borough is the most populous. Could you please add "largest village" and "largest borough" to the template? Or if there is some way to make it just "largest" and the municipality is user specified (so we would have to enter city or village or borough - maybe city could be default - not sure of the programming limits here). Hopefully this is clear, please ask if it is not. Thanks! Ruhrfisch 16:19, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
