Timothy O'Neill

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Timothy O'Neill is a fictional animated character who appeared regularly on MTV's animated series Daria.

On the show, Mr. Timothy O'Neill taught English and Self Esteem class at Lawndale High, and was in many respects the polar opposite of the uptight Mr. Anthony DeMartino. Mr. O'Neill was gentle, soft spoken and ludicrously sensitive, very in touch with his emotions but incapable of controlling them. His English assignments were often ill-disguised attempts to get his students to express personal pain or experiences, and he himself would often cry in class. Furthermore, O'Neill put no legitimate intellectual effort in his Self Esteem class and recited the curriculum by rote while refusing to answer any original questions from students.

On the second season episode, "The Daria Hunter", Mr. O'Neill (unwittingly) began a sexual-but-not-romantic relationship with the bitter, man-hating Janet Barch, which is repeated in episodes plotted similarly to "The Daria Hunter", Fair Enough and Just Add Water (and was mentioned briefly in the episodes Murder She Snored and The F Word [a.k.a Fail]).

In the series finale/made-for-TV movie, "Is It College Yet?", Mr. O'Neill is coached by Mr. DeMartino to stand up to Ms. Barch and break up with him, but Barch ends up beating up Mr. DeMartino and taking a shine to Mr. O'Neill's aggressive attitude.
