He graduated with BA (summa cum laude) from Rice University in 1992 and completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at UBC in 1995.
He has won the Governor General's Gold Medal (as Head of Graduating Class in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at UBC), the NSERC Doctoral Prize, and the Premier's Research Excellence Award (PREA) of Ontario, Canada.
His research focuses on computational geometry. Among his many contributions, he is best known for his algorithm on convex hull (often referred to as Timothy Chan's Algorithm or simply Chan's Algorithm). He has given a number of invited lectures, notably in DIMACS, MSRI, Max Planck Institute for Informatics, and more recently in the NHC Workshops of Japan.
He serves as Associate Editor for International Journal of Computational Geometry and Applications as well as ACM Transactions on Algorithms. He is also on the editorial board of the following journals: Discrete & Computational Geometry, and Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications.
