The text states that Mr. Phelps traveled to California by ship via the Panama Canal. Since that canal was only a dream-project in 1849, can we assume that he traveled by ship to the North Coast of Panama (Balboa?), crossed the Isthmus by railroad, and resumed ship travel from the South Coast (Panama City)? Somebody who knows ought to clarify.Raymondwinn 09:26, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
