"1785 - Richard Crosbie makes several unsuccessful attempts to cross the Irish Channel in a helium-filled balloon." Considering helium wasn't discovered until 1868 and wasn't isolated chemically until 1895, I _don't_ think this is likely. Hydrogen, perhaps? Source material would help. The Wikipedia page on Richard Crosbie states hydrogen and references an external site that confirms this 128.87.251.169 10:59, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
