Description

An Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio appalachiensis).
Photo taken with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 near the village of Valle Crucis in Watauga County, NC, USA.
NOTE: Butterfly identification is notoriously difficult, and I'm not an expert on the subject by any stretch of the imagination. This butterfly may be an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) instead - my preliminary identification is based entirely on the size of the specimen (which unfortunately isn't obvious in the photo) and where the butterfly was located. If I have misidentified the species, please let me know and I'll be happy to change the description.
