[edit] reversion
Why is the same link repeated over and over for the racial make-up section? This is clearly a case of overlinking. One link to the article should be sufficient --- all of the links that were restored are redirects to the Race and ethnicity in the United States Census article.
The Manual of Style says:
- An article may be overlinked if any of the following is true:
- A link for any single term is excessively repeated in the same article, as in the example of overlinking that follows: "Excessive" is more than once for the same term, in a line or a paragraph, because in this case one or more duplicate links will almost certainly appear needlessly on the viewer's screen.
- However, note that duplicating an important link distant from a previous occurrence in an article may well be appropriate (but see the exception about dates, below).
And WP:CONTEXT sys:
- What generally should not be linked: The same link multiple times, because redundant links clutter up the page and make future maintenance harder. It is not uncommon to repeat a link that had last appeared much earlier in the article, but there is hardly ever a reason to link the same term twice in the same section.
As far as linking "marriage", WP:CONTEXT says that it is generally incorrect to link plain English words. There is no likely source for confusion here, and all readers can reasonably be expected to understand what marriage means.
Finally, I do not accept that this overlinking should remain just because it is "standard". If the standard does not make sense and does not conform to the Manual of Style, then it should be changed. Ground Zero | t 17:54, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- Since your complaint is about a bot generated section of the article, you should probably take it up on the bots talk page where User:Ram-Man has a chance of seeing it. Otherwise your changes are just going to get reverted the next time the bot comes through anyway. Personally I don't have a problem with it as is, currently those links are all redirects, but that doesn't mean they'll always stay that way. Kmusser 18:37, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- Or, as is also possible, if you change the section it will cause problems the next time the bot goes through, as it likely won't be programmed to look for modified versions such as the result of your changes. Nyttend 18:54, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
