Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA) was established by the Carnegie Foundation in 1918 as a pension system for college and university professors. In 1952, TIAA established a variable annuity fund which in named the College Retirement Equities Fund (CREF) as a mechanism to balance the inflation risk of investing in fixed-income instruments against the market risk of investing in equities. TIAA-CREF is now a group of companies which offers a wide variety of financial investment products not only to America's education and research community but to the general public, as well.
