[edit] Poop dab page

Hi. I cleaned up the dab page Poop some while ago and kept it on my watch list and have not taken it off since. The talk page gets vandalised several times a week, but it's not really a problem (yet). I've had a look at the edits of the last 4 months (80+, not counting reverts), and this is the diff result. Now, approximately 1.5 years ago, you semi-protected the talk page [1], maybe just by accident telling from the following edits. As I can't really tell whether talk pages are also allowed/supposed to be semi-protected in certain cases, and I don't want to go to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection before I know, I just want you as an admin to have a look at the talk page and tell me what should be done/if it's really worth it/recommendable to have it semi-protected (in this case). – sgeureka tc 10:07, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

According to Wikipedia:Semi-protection_policy#Semi-protection talk pages should only be temporarily semi-protected.
If I were god-king of Wikipedia then I would probably permanently semi-protect talk:poop, but since it is not written in the policy I can't do so unilaterally. I still remember the complaints from when I keep some much-vandalized pages permanently semi-protected before permanent semi-protection was allowed :).
So if you want the talk page protected then try posting a request on Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. Thue | talk 16:56, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Non-free use disputed for Image:DIKU logo.png

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:DIKU logo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:01, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Skills, Abilities and Aptitudes Section

I have finally replied to you comment about some confusing wording on the Aptitude page from last December. Do you think we could work it back into the article? Thanks. Jongrover 17:08, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

I tried reformulating the article a bit. Thue | talk 10:36, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Pomagalski" direct deletion

You previously deleted the redirect Pomagalski, which is the full name of the French company Poma (and the target of the former redirect). I know this was back in 2005, but I was just wondering why it shouldn't be there... --Shadowlink1014 16:17, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

The deletion comment say "db-r1" (Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#Redirects), so I guess it was a blind redirect at the time. As the article pointed to now exists I have undeleted the page. Thue | talk 06:44, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] One of your images has been nominated for deletion

Hi Thue, unfortunately we had to nominate one of your pictures for deletion at the Commons. The problem is that freedom of panorama in Denmark does not grant the privilege of commercial use in case of statues (or any other kind of art which is not a building). Hence, if the artist has not died 70 years ago, we cannot accept such a picture at Commons. Regards, AFBorchert 05:51, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. [edit] Janet Bess Schultz

You patrolled this page but considering the contents I deleted the article following a speedy request, am I misinterpreting the function of the patrol button? –– Lid(Talk) 01:25, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes obvious speedy delete. It also had the speedy tag when I marked it. Wikipedia:New pages patrol/patrolled pages says you should mark as patrolled "Any page that is tagged for speedy deletion, so people do not waste time reviewing the same page multiple times.". I did not delete it outright because there was a small chance she was actually notable, and leaving it non-deleted for a while would give the creator time to add the missing notability claim. Hi,

I have removed the text with which you had a point of view dispute. I would therefore be grateful if you would take the POV dispute tag of the webpage.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:DIKU_logo.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:DIKU_logo.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Dream out loud (talk) 02:51, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:BP200906.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:BP200906.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --13:13, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Logo

Hi, you may be interested/helpful in the discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Wikipedia logo improvement. Thanks :) -- Quiddity (talk) 02:57, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Per this edit, the top-left character is a khmer character. You don't need to fix it. Can you please check out the Quiddity's link and confirm if other issues have been taken care of? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:11, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I think it is both a Khmer character and a Tamil character, then. The problem with it was not that the character was drawn wrongly, but that it did not represent the sound "w" like the other characters in the logo. The Khmer character does not represent "w" either. Thue | talk 08:08, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
According to Wikipedia:Wikipedia logos#Alphabets represented in the logo, they do represent the "letter from that alphabet that most closely resembles the English "W" as in "Wikipedia"."
However, according to Nohat at User talk:Nohat/archive 2005-02-22#Trouble in All the Logos!, "only some of the symbols were selected to represent "Wikipedia"— others were chosen at random." and 2 threads at User talk:Nohat/archive 2007-06-06 say the same thing. Angela says the same thing in meta:Talk:Main Page/Archives/2006/01#Error in the Wikipedia Globe. Zocky repeats it at Talk:Main Page/Archive 86#Wrong devnagari symbol for "wi" in Wikipedia's logo.
The only remaining tiny flaw I can see in your logo Thue, is the top-right piece (klingon r) is lacking any depth (there should be a black edge to the piece, but instead we see the grey of the inside). Not very important at all though. -- Quiddity (talk) 19:21, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I (and the person who reported the problem with the Tamil/Khmer character) thought that all the characters should represent "w". But that is obviously not the case. IMO the Klingon "r" is within stylistic freedom, so I guess the logo is correct now. When at first you don't succeed, redefine success :). Thue | talk 19:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Variants

Do we have all the required variants ready (version with logotype like commons:Image:Wikipedia-logo-en.png, and anything else that might need to be duplicated at commons:Category:High-resolution official Wikimedia logos)? (svg/png, huge/usage-size, with/without logotype)

If so, or when done, just let User:David Gerard know. (I emailed him about a week ago, and he said he has passed on my comments (the nytimeslink, and old mailing list links, and current discussion at WP:VPR) to the comcom and board mailing lists. So the appropriate people know that at least something is going on, if they're not actively lurking! Then they can give the go-ahead (hopefully, presumably), and the update process can begin. I think.)

And a Huge thanks again, for all your work on this :) -- Quiddity (talk) 00:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I have no clue about how to create the SVG logo :). Thue | talk 17:03, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
The one with logotype is the most important (ie what we use in the topleft corner). Do we have that ready somewhere?
Also, I just noticed that commons:Image:Wikipedia-logo.svg has a heavy disclaimer ("experimental", "not ready to become an official Wikimedia logo"), so ignore the svg issue (and sorry to confuse).
And replies here are fine, I watchlist ;) -- Quiddity (talk) 18:52, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
I just created Image:Wikipedia-logo-en thue.png. It is not exactly pixel for pixel identical to the other logo (I had to manually antialias the edge...), it is ever so slighly darker, and it seems to be moved half a pixel to the left, but it is probably close enough. Thue | talk 20:08, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Great stuff. I've left a note at User talk:David Gerard#Wikipedia Logo, asking him what's next.
And I just found the 3rd(8th?) level of complexity: we don't actually use Image:Wikipedia-logo-en.png, but rather Image:Wiki.png! Way too many variants to keep track of... I'm glad we're cleaning things up finally. No wonder the international versions are all so divergent. -- Quiddity (talk) 23:09, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Created in Image:Wiki thue.png, after a few tries... Thue | talk 15:44, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Is there any way to get the filesize further reduced? I just noticed the last edit-summary/file-history at Image:Wiki.png says "RGB -> Grayscale to save 7kb * a hojillion hits a day. Remember everybody, your donations pay for that bandwidth! :)" which brings it down to 16KB, whilst Image:Wiki thue.png is 41KB. -- Quiddity (talk) 19:25, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Done. Compressing it harder seems to result in no visible changes, but 1/3 the file size. Thue | talk 19:51, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

BTW, I have asked at the Japanese Wikipedia embassy whether my Japanese character is acceptable. We may want to wait for their answer. ja:Wikipedia:Chatsubo_for_Non-Japanese_Speakers#Japanese_characters_in_logo. Thue | talk 19:56, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

I got a reply at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Japan#Japanese_characters_in_logo. Seems I have to redraw the character :(. Thue | talk 20:31, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia logo

Hello! I heard that you had an interest in fixing up the text on the Wikipedia logo; I'd like to draw your attention to the following, perhaps you can help me with a little background research I'm doing on that same issue.

We're also bandying about the optional idea of replacing the Klingon piece, since the tlhIngan Hol Wikipedia is no longer around.

I saw your edit to the image fixing the Devanagari and Katakana pieces of course; my own proposal is to remake the 3D sphere rather than fiddling the image (not that your version doesn't look good). Any ideas on the bottom two characters mentioned in those topics linked above? Particularly the edgemost one, it's driving me batty.

Thanks for your time! --tiny plastic Grey Knight 20:37, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I have a plan to get a raytracer to redraw the kana characters since the Japanese I asked said my fix was wrong. I might as well replace the Klingon character once I have the raytracer up and running. I just have to finish my exam in two weeks first... But yes, totally redrawing the logo would also be nice :). I have no idea about what the bottom two characters are. Thue | talk 22:37, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
