[edit] Etymology

Did Thrippunithura get the name from the Poornathrayeesa temple, or did the temple get the name from the place ? Tintin 05:14, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

Thripunithura got its name from the temple only. It means thiru - pooni- thura. pooni means the basket in which arrows are kept. When Arjuna visited Lord Mahavishnu , Mahavishnu Gave him an idol to worship. Arjuna put the idol in his Pooni ( a basket holding arrows) and serched all over for an ideal place to place it. Then he met Lord Ganapathi and told him to find an ideal place for him. Ganapathi agreed and serched for it. Then he came across a place and being the perfect place , Ganapathi himself sat there facing east. After a while Arjuna came there and saw Ganapathi. He got very angry and he kicked Ganapathi and Ganapathi turned and sat facing south. Arjuna placed the idol facing east and worhsipped him there.

Thus the temple was created. -- Dileep
