Thomas G. Stemberg founded Staples Inc. with Leo Kahn, in 1986 when a frustration with small stores for critical supplies combined with Stemberg's history in the grocery business Star Markets, led to his vision. He noticed many retailers on Main Street selling ball point pens at $2 - $3 with a wholesale cost of just 30 cents.
Stemberg is now a managing general partner for Highland Capital Partners, a venture capitalist firm, in Lexington Massachusetts. Stemberg was ranked 50th in a recent article describing the 50 Wealthiest Bostonians. His estimated net worth is $202 million.
