Thomas G. Carpenter was the founding President of the University of North Florida, and the President of Memphis State University.

He received his Bachelors degree from Memphis State University, his Masters from Baylor University, and a Doctorate from the University of Florida. He started his educational career at the University of Florida back in 1957. It should also be noted that he worked for Florida Atlantic University and the University of West Florida as well.

In 1969, Dr. Carpenter began the challenge of building a new University from scratch. Ultimately, he founded the University of North Florida, and in 1972 they enrolled their first charter class. In 1980 he accepted the Presidency of his alma mater Memphis State University.[1]
