Here's a reply to the same question on Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous
Thomas Jean Stieltjes, a Dutch mathematician. I'd pronounce it something like "steel-tyes", with stress on the first sillable. There's a slight possibility that an actual Dutchman might tell you something different, though.--212.202.184.238 17:41, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

I was told - again by someone from the Netherlands - that the "t" is silent ("as in Harlow"?): so "Steel-yes" might be a slightly better approximation. Hair Commodore 19:33, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Splitting up Stieltjes Jr and Stieltjes Sr

According to this sentence from the MacTutor Archive:

"In fact the dictionary of biography of famous people from the Netherlands which I [EFR] consulted before writing this biography contained a two page entry concerning Thomas Stieltjes, the father, while there was only a single paragraph on his son, Thomas Stieltjes the mathematician."

It may be worth splitting up the articles as a full article on Stieltjes Sr could turn out to be quite substantial. Any thoughts? CloudNine 15:51, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
