The Long Song began at the 2006 Digital Earth Summit on Sustainability in Auckland New Zealand when a specially-formed youth delegation saw that the conversation was too big to rush. As a result, our community is full of bright young sparks from New Zealand.
While we can't always meet in person, we can collaborate here, any time.
And we'd love to have you join us. If we're going to save the world we need all the help we can get.

The Long Song is a group of young people based in New Zealand formed after the Digital Earth Summit in Auckland, New Zealand in 2006 aimed at the publication and implementation of more sustainable practice of everyday life.

The idea of this talk page is to post information regarding the problems people face, how they are currently being solved, and how they could possibly be solved in a more sustainable way.

The Long Song is also about joining together young New Zealanders who are interested in a more sustainable way of life.

Inspired by Carl, Jennifer, Glen, Louie, Jacinta and many others.

[edit] History

The Long Song was created by youth delegates of the Digital Earth Summit on Sustainability that was held in Auckland on the 27 - 30 August, 2006. The youth delegates were known as Digital Earth Youth Voice delegates.

[edit] Digital Earth Youth Voice

The Digital Earth Youth Voice (DEYV) were/are a group of approximately 100 youths from across Aotearoa New Zealand who were given the opportunity to attend the Digital Earth Summit on Sustainability.

These youths responded to the call for applications for youth delegates and sent in their visions of what New Zealand would look like in the year 2050. The visions were collated and profiles of DEYV delegates were shown at the summit.

During their time at the summit, they actively participated in all aspects of the summit. Following is a post about the DEYV delegates taken from the International Symposium on Digital Earth (ISDE) blog, blogged by Dr. Tim Foresman:

"Without a doubt, the greatest contribution to the success of the Digital Earth Summit in Auckland was the input and participation of one hundred members of the younger generation, whose sobriquet the Now Generation, changed the dynamics of an already connected audience. Ranging from 17 to 25 years old, these thoughtful and enthusiastic participants began by peppering the older generation with pragmatic questions ranging from where the planetary systems were heading to why New Zealand would decommission railroads to be overrun with carbon spewing automobiles. The Digital Earth community has been blessed with this infusion of talent and intellect that is betting their planet on collective ways to sustain life and protect the ecological goods and services. And they plan to accomplish this with a flair for also incorporating more humane aspect of civilization; jobs, community-cohesion, art, music, and dance. This group will have a profound impact on the maturation and implementation of ISDE5. Clever readers will begin checking out their nascent dialog on this topic (www.thelongsong.com)."

The DEYV delegates are the founding members of The Long Song.

A New Zealand Delegation of DEYV attend the International Symposium on Digital Earth at Berkeley University in June of 2007, where a collaboratory between NZ youth and North American Youth took place. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.238.51.118 (talk) 03:39, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
