A friend of mine (names withheld) frequently peruses Craigslist. (Let it be known that I do as well, mainly for leisure.) It's mainly a time-killing pastime, but sometimes interesting things pop up in such a place. Said friend also has a penchant for unadvisable adventure. This past weekend (January 20, 2007, to be precise), my friend answers an unusual ad. Apparently, a young woman (23 yrs. old) hit up the "women seeking men" portion of the list service seeking someone to help her move from Oak Park to Chicago. This in itself is not unusual - I see such requests for help on a regular basis, but the unusual part is that it was located in the personals section. This, I find, is an unusual way to meet new men - but what the hell, I told him to go for it.
He took the plunge, went to Oak Park, and met up with aforementioned woman. He helps her move, they have dinner at a restaurant back in Oak Park, and he helps her get settled in her new (albeit temporary) digs in the big city. Apparently they hit it off rather well...he did not kiss and tell, but he seemed rather pleased with the outcome of the evening.
They have only spoken once since - he e-mailed, and she responded. I believe he may have sent one more e-mail in addition to his second, to-this-point-unanswered response. I think it's now devolving into a waste of time, and a reason that why it is very difficult (even in Wikipedia) to assume good faith of others. I think my friend is too optimistic - my friend thinks I'm a pompous, cynical asshole. In the end...it's all good. He reminds me to always assume good faith in the actions of the human race. Being a Wikipedian himself (he has asked me not to reveal his identity), he reminds me of the Wikipedian tenet to always assume good faith. I reply with my standard retort: "It's hard to assume good faith when shit like this goes down."
I consider Wikipedia my exercise in remembering the good aspects of the human race. And when that memory fails, I always have the history of vandalized articles with which to read and amuse myself.
Thanks for reading. I know this was essential information for you.
ADDENDA:
- January 26, 2007 - I am told that the ubiquitous woman is a user of Wikipedia. In the event you, said woman, are reading this, I implore you to at least contact my dear, misguided friend, and inform him of your intentions. This will at least get him to shut his mouth about this topic. Thank you.
- January 27, 2007 - Apparently the two lovebirds made contact and visited with each other yesterday evening. Again, the gentleman that my friend inevitably is did not kiss and tell...but the moral of the story, as always, is that I'm an idiot. Carry on.
