[edit] Stuff and nonsense

[edit] Galaxy Song
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
- Though the theory of evolution has been controversial, it is currently accepted by the majority of scientists and academics.[1]
And revolving at 900 miles an hour
- The speed of a point on the Earth's equator is just over 1,000 miles per hour (seen from an inertial frame of reference), but this changes with latitude. In the United Kingdom the speed is approximately 700 miles per hour. This difference in speed and the conservation of angular momentum gives rise to the Coriolis effect.[2]
That's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned
- The radius of Earth's orbit is about 150,000,000 km[3], which is roughly 93,000,000 miles. The speed of orbit can be obtained by dividing the circumference (2πr) by the orbital period (1 year) to give 18.5 miles per second.
A sun that is the source of all our power
- Geothermal power does not stem from the Sun, while tidal power derives partially from the gravitation of the Moon.
The Sun and you and me, and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way
- The name Milky Way came from the part of the galactic plane that is visible from Earth and appears as a diffuse band of white light across the sky. Greek mythology explained this as milk spilt by Hera when suckled by Heracles. Their name for it was Γαλαξίας Galaxias (derived from the word for milk γάλα, gala) which also gave rise to the word galaxy.
Our galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars
It's 100,000 light-years side-to-side
It bulges in the middle, 16,000 light-years thick
But out by us it's just 3000 light-years wide
We're 30,000 light-years from galactic central point
We go round every 200 million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe
The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whiz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light you know
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
Because there's bugger all down here on Earth.
