There are seven different species of sea turtles of which six are endangered, one under threat. The six CRITICALLY endangered species are:
- Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys corlacea)
- Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta)
- Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricta)
- Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
- Kemp's ridley Turtle (lepidochelys kempii)
- Olive ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea)
The other sea turtle (the one which is under threat) is named:
- Flatback Turtle (Natator depressus)
These are the only sea turtles today and if we dont act soon these graceful creatures will be gone forever! Just imagine the creatures that lived the dinosaurs are killed by human activity. The leatherback turtle is the largest sea turtle in the world. It has a rubbery shell unlike all other turtles. It has a pair shaped head which it cannot retract into its boady. The leatherback turtle like most sea turtles by not haveing claws on its flippers. Like most sea turtles the leatherback turtle spends most of its life at sea, only comeing to land to lay its eggs.It feeds on jellyfish and usely dives down to 100m to get its food. There thick blubbery skin allows for them to go to as north as Iceland to as south as Cape Horn. Leatherback turtles are the widest ranging turtles in the world as an idividual tagged at south America was later found on the other side the Atlantic ocean! I now think Leatherback turtles are really amazing!
