Tragedy is defined in The Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “a serious drama typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force (as destiny) and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror”. The writer Earnest Hemingway is not known as an author of tragedies, and this applies also to his 1950s novella The Old Man and the Sea. Although it contains elements of sadness and loss, The Old Man and the Sea is not a tragedy.

Instead of eliciting pity or terror in the reader, The Old Man and the Sea presents a story of triumph and achievement, and though it has elements of sadness and loss, the story ends on a comforting and powerful note.
