The Winston Churchill School was established in Woking, England in 1967. It is near Knaphill, Bisley, West End, Brookwood and Pirbright. The school is currently classed as a Sports College.[1]
The school has recently developed a partnership with the Bishop Ngala school in Kenya. Furthermore the Woking school has raised money for facilities in the Kenyan school, such as a science laboratory.
The latest Ofsted report concluded in 2007 that the Winston Churchill School was:
- a good school which not only enables students to achieve high academic standards but also to develop into mature, well-rounded young people prepared for the next stage of their education and life.[2]
It must be noted though that the school's rate of unauthorised absence is 1.4% compared to 1.1% locally. However, GCSE results are higher than those achieved locally and nationally.[3]
A notable past pupil is the TV actor Peter Davison and the former Mayor of Wiltshire, Sue Nettle. The most notable of the current school staff is Vishall Anand Gunnoo, a science teacher who plays football for Bracknell Manics FC.
[edit] Organisation
Teaching occurs during one hour lessons with P.E. lessons twice a week (more frequent for P.E. GCSE students) with extra sport, P.E. and "enrichment" style activities (in the form of after-school clubs).
The school has a magazine called "WOM" (Word of Mouth/Winston Official Magazine) founded in 2004. There is a 'Churchill Suite', also known as the 'Nigel Davis Memorial Suite' which hosts some lessons.
