"The Up Song" was Kevin Ayers’ first release after signing to Island Records. The song was a single-only release in 1974. The B-side, "Everybody’s Sometime and Some People’s All The Time Blues" was taken from Ayers’ album, The Confessions of Dr. Dream and Other Stories, which was released the following month.
