The Ridings High School (popularly referred to simply as 'The Ridings') is a large secondary school located in the village of Winterbourne in South Gloucestershire, just on the outskirts of Bristol, England. It was founded in 1957 and opened by former Labour minister Tony Benn. The school administers Winterbourne's local swimming pool which is part of a wider controversial 'Sports Village' scheme initiated by The Ridings in 2004 which has met with a series of local challenges. The head teacher is Dr RS Gibson, who is the third head teacher since 1957. The school has aproximately 1500 pupils, not including Sixth Form.

[edit] Academic standards

The school has expanded considerably since its inception to become one of the most eminent comprehensive schools in the UK[citation needed], achieving consistently high grades in all qualifications[citation needed] and providing services such as a technology college, Arts Centre and Sixth Form. The school has a very good reputation, especially with the examination side of school.[citation needed], It has from 2006 offered the International Baccalaureate, becoming the only school in South Gloucestershire to offer this qualification, and even attracting students from abroad [1] . It hosts the most popular Sixth Form in the county, with children joining at the age of 16 from all of the other local secondary schools.

The majority of the sixth form students pursue the path of higher education, many students going on to study various subjects at prestigous universities, such as Oxford University, Bristol University and many others[citation needed].

[edit] 50th Anniversary

In order to mark the school's fiftieth year of existence, The Ridings invited all of its former students and staff to celebrate the event in May 2007. It is issuing The Ridings' "fiftee" calendar as part of the celebrations.
