The Press is the local daily paper for a substantial area of North and East Yorkshire, based on the city of York. It is printed by the Newsquest (York) Ltd, a subsidiary of the Newsquest Media Group.
Known as the Evening Press since its first publication in 1882, the paper changed from broadsheet to tabloid format on 6 September 2004 and moved to morning printing on 21 April 2006, when the title changed to reflect the revised schedule.
In addition to York, principal towns covered by the paper include Selby, Tadcaster, Thirsk, Easingwold, Harrogate, Ryedale (including Malton, Norton and Pickering) and the wider east coast.
The Press often runs local campaigns, such as the 'Guardian Angels' appeal and the 'Change It' campaign. Street Talk, the paper's grass-roots coverage of village and district events, is produced by an army of community correspondents.
The paper has suffered since falling into American hands. District offices have closed, there have been numerous job cuts, and the paper has gone from being a four-edition evening paper to a one-edition morning paper.
Newsquest (York) Ltd made £4.3 million profit in 2007, and there is widespread dismay over the firm's failure to support the city's economy by reinvesting this money locally. Staff are poorly paid, and journalists at the paper are currently striking for the first time in 30 years, after being offered yet another derisory pay-deal, worse even than that given to their peers on other Newsquest titles. The walk-out has had a major impact on the quality of the paper, with management struggling to find newsworthy and up-to-date stories.
The paper's NUJ branch has received overwhelming support from York residents, readers and politicians, as well as other Newsquest staff.
