The Orbital is the official student publication of SURHUL. It contains a range of subjects covering student life, culture, entertainment and current affairs. It attempts to strike a balance between serious topics and light-hearted features.

Published by the Students' Union, the magazine releases up to 14 fortnightly issues per academic year. It is produced entirely by students with any student being able to contribute. The magazine generally observes an autonomous operation and advocates freedom of speech, though the final output is constitutionally supervised by the Students' Union, which mainly funds the magazine, through the Sabbatical Officer for Communications & Services.

[edit] The Board

The Orbital board is lead by an Editor and a Deputy Editor. These positions are elected annually via a campus-wide election in which all 7000 students are allowed to vote. A Sabbatical Officer of the Students' Union, the Vice President (Communications & Services), is ultimately responsible for the strategic direction of the publication, as well as for ensuring the legality of The Orbital, and acts as the 'Editor-in-Chief'.

The Sub-Board consists of the following:

  • Publishing Director
  • Art Director
  • Chief Sub-Editor
  • Associate Editor for Society (News, Opinions, Features, Sports & Societies)
  • Associate Editor for Culture (Art, Poetry, Books, Fashion, Travel)
  • Associate Editor for Lifestyle (Film, Music, Theatre, Food, Health & Fitness, Science & Technology)

[edit] History

Royal Holloway's official student publication was originally launched as a newspaper called The Egham Sun in 1986. In the early 1990s it was converted into a magazine format and renamed The Orbital after the nearby M25 motorway. The magazine developed into an A4 glossy magazine in the late 1990s before transforming into a B5 monthly publication in 2005 with a new logo and style. In 2007 it changed into a 40 page full colour quarterfold magazine for one issue before reverting back to B5 and printed on newspaper in September 2007. It is distributed across the campus on a fortnightly basis.
