The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Muscle Shoals Rhythm section was formed by musicians who had played on Soul classics like Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" at Fame Studios owned by Rick Hall in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Pianist Barry Beckett, drummer Roger Hawkins, bass player David Hood, and rhythm guitarist Jimmy Johnson played on countless hits by Soul music heavyweights Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, The Staple Singers, and Johnnie Taylor. They later backed up many of Pop music's biggest names, and played on multiple albums by Bob Seger and Rod Stewart. The latter initially refused to believe the group that had played on standards like "Mustang Sally" and "I'll Take You There" were all of the Caucasian persuasion. Steve Winwood recruited David Hood and Barry Beckett to play in his outfit Traffic.

Other musicians who have been a part of or played alongside this legendary rhythm section include Clayton Ivey (organ), as well as keyboardists Spooner Oldham and Carson Whitsett, and lead guitarists Reggie Young, Eddie Hinton, and Pete Carr.
