The Mandrake Mechanism is a term coined by Edward Griffin in his book entitled The Creature from Jekyll Island. It refers to "the method by which the Federal Reserve creates money out of nothing," and is an explanation of how the government is able to create currency out of debt Monetization.

Mandrake the Magician was a comic strip character from the 1940s. He had the ability to magically create things and, when appropriate, make them disappear. Thus, the Mandrake Mechanism was aptly named in his honor.
