The Man I Love (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Man I Love" is a popular standard, with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by his brother Ira. Originally part of the 1927 score for the Gershwin antiwar musical satire Strike Up the Band, the song was removed from the 1930 version of the show, and, as with many standards of the era, has become more famous as an independent popular song than as one from a Broadway musical.

Billie Holiday recorded a version of this song, as did Ella Fitzgerald (Ira Gershwin commented, "I didn't realize our songs were so good until Ella sang them.") and Kate Bush. Hazel O'Connor recorded a version for her Smile album in 1984.

In 2006, Israeli musician Ivri Lider recorded a version of the song as a part of the soundtrack from the movie 'The bubble'.

"The Man I Love" was recorded by musician Kate Bush featuring world-renowned harmonica player Larry Adler for the 1994 Glory Of Gershwin CD, a collection of 16 Gershwin songs released in honor of Mr. Adler's 80th birthday produced by Sir George Martin.

Released on July 18, 1994 the single climbed to number 22 in the UK Singles Chart. The B-Side of the 7" single was an edited version of Adler and Martin's rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue" (4:08). The CD single contained both the 7" edit and the full-length album version of the song (8:28).

"The Man I Love" was the second Kate Bush single to be released in the UK on a label other than EMI.
