The Lost Cement Mine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lost Cement Mine is a legend of a gold vein in the Eastern Sierra Nevada's, found in 1857 but since lost. Its initial discovery was by two men who were separated from their group while crossing the Sierras. They traveled through the "burnt country" and found the gold vein along the headwaters of the Owens River. The entire story and later expeditions were published in the book "The Lost Cement Mine" by James W. A. Wright. Samuel Clemens, or Mark Twain, also pursued finding the Lost Cement Mine, and included it in his diary/book Roughing It.
