The Lion Man

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lion Man is a television show in New Zealand. The series is based on the New Zealand based in big cat sanctuary called Zion Wildlife Gardens. The series focuses on the activities of the Lion Man, the park's owner Craig Busch, in running the park, with narration throughout from actor Miles Anderson. The series also follows him on related promotional activities, and on his various wildlife missions abroad[1], including trips to Africa and Thailand. The Lion Man is one of New Zealand's most successful television series, showing in 93 countries world wide[2].

The show has broadcast three series. The first two series were commissioned by state broadcaster NZTV, although following controversy over a conviction for assault by Busch, the third series looked in doubt[2]. Subsequently, the third series was funded independantly, and then bought by NZTV in light of the popularity of the show. The show is produced by Great Southern Television.

The show highlights the conservation activities of the park, including the birth of several cubs of endangered species, and the filming of the lions for television adverts and other promotions. As well as its visitor income and these promotions, the series itself acts as a source of vital funding for the park's breeding programme[2].

It has a BAFTA award winning[citation needed] theme tune "He's a lion man", and a 9.8 out of 10 rating on IMDB.[1]

The final line of the lyrics of the program's theme tune illustrate the personal mission of the 'Lion Man':

He's a Lion Man, doing all he can, To create a sanctuary and a home.
