The Judgement of Paris (opera)

The Judgement of Paris is an operatic libretto written by William Congreve. In March 1700, a group of English nobles headed by Lord Halifax offered a "Musick Prize" for the best setting of the words. Several composers entered the competition and the results were announced in June 1701. John Weldon came first; John Eccles second; Daniel Purcell third; and Gottfried Finger fourth. In the long run, Eccles' version proved most successful.
