The film follows Lenny Cantrow, a sporting goods salesman and newlywed from New York city (Charles Grodin), who meets and pursues Kelly, a blonde WASP (Cybill Shepherd), while his bride is suffering from severe sunburn on their honeymoon. Lenny's decision to dump his new wife (Jeannie Berlin) in order to court Kelly leads to a near-disastrous trip to Minnesota, where Kelly's suspicious and hostile father (Eddie Albert) is an unrelenting obstacle.
